Awareness workshop on September16th,2022. “Bees and Climate Change”

• Under the auspices of the Ministries of Agriculture, Tourism and Environment, HEAD Association, in cooperation with the Association of Mayors of Byblos District and the Municipality of Barbara, organized a workshop entitled “Bees and Climate Change” in the hall of the Church of Saint Barbara in the town of Barbara, in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Hajj Hassan represented by Engineer Sonia Al-Abyad. Minister of Tourism, Eng. Walid Nassar, represented by Me. Raphael Sfeir, President of the Union of Byblos Municipalities, Mr. Fadi Martinos, represented by the Vice President of the Union, Mayor of Al-Monsef Khaled Sadaka

  Head of the Byblos District Mayor, Michel Gibran, Rene Mouawad Foundation, represented by Mrs. May Traboulsi and Fouad Habashi, Mayor of El Berbara, Mr. George Moufarej, Mayor of El Berbara, Michel Mikhael, Father Youhanna Yasmine, Priest of the Town, Head of the Cultural Council in Byblos, Dr. Nawfal Nawfal, Vice President of the Jbeil Center Byblos at the Lebanese Red Cross Mr. Gaby Abi Khalil, Ms. Solange Bassil, Lebanese Red Cross Youth Officer, Eng.   HEAD president, Eng. Marie Therese Merhej Seif said, As you know, we are almost two months away from the COP27 Climate Change Conference that will be held this year in Sharm El Sheikh,One of the objectives of the COP is to mitigate emissions and the negative effects of climate change.We all know that the world is fast-paced in its race against climate change influencing public policy decisions on one of the most defining issues of our time...It is known that agriculture contributes to these emissions, although its contribution is low, especially in Lebanon, where it does not exceed 5%, according to the latest report of the Ministry of Environment.Hence, agriculture is one of the sectors that contributes the least to the issue of emissions, but it is one of the sectors that are most affected by it.The state of honey bees from the state of agriculture in our country,Therefore, we must be prepared and in the best ways to mitigate and adapt to this change.On the other hand, bee tourism, which is part of eco-tourism in Lebanon, has not yet taken its full due.We are trying hard in our workshop today, with your support, to shed light on bee tourism and give it the right it deserves, raise the problem of climate change with regard to beekeeping and their breeding, and find the best solutions to preserve this sector.Abyad recited the speech of the Minister of Agriculture, in which she praised the importance of honey bees in the Lebanese agricultural sector and the quality of production, and pointed to the Ministry's support for this sector in several stages, but according to the available capabilities. She also hoped that the ministry would be able to support this sector more in the coming yearsMr. Sfeir also read the speech of the Minister of Tourism, who stressed the importance of bee tourism, as well as working to develop the hospitality sector and the accompanying local production, including bee honey, and to introduce citizens and tourists to heritage, archaeological and natural sites in the district by visiting these sites and inserting them into a comprehensive tourism map and preparing QR Code of its own.The mayor of Al-Barbara also enumerated the activities and achievements of the municipality, especially at the agricultural level, and assisting beekeepers in the town in terms of facilitating their work and producing the necessary raw materials.Then Dr. Danny El-Obeid, a lecturer at the Lebanese University in beekeeping, spoke about the importance of bees and the impact of climate change on honeybees. He also spoke about the importance of the role of bees in nature and stressed the need to follow up on the interest in honeybees.After that, the participants answered the beekeepers’ questions and concerns, and the recommendations issued by this workshop were formulated and will be submitted to the Minister of Agriculture through the committee emanating from this meeting, and some solutions to be put into implementation.
